  1. Is this the kiss of death for Betsy Markey? Apparently now NOT raising money is the hip new thing in political campaigns! Even worse, amidst ham handed spin ahead of the FEC filing deadline, Markey’s campaign is already being analogized to Howard Dean’s famously imploding 2004 race:

    http://coloradoconfi

Standard campaign tools like ActBlue and facebook – and even things called “blogs” – are now a “different tack” showing how cutting edge Betsy’s campaign is.

This isn’t a good sign for a campaign that supposedly kicked off with a huge base of support already in place.

        1. Do you not remember any of musgrave’s campaigns thats the only way she wins.  The dems need some one who can hit back harder if they want to win.

          1. The question is can AP concentrate on slinging mud at MM rather than defensively answering the AP attacks.

And can AP put out a logical, consistent, complete story about her financial troubles before the election kicks into high gear? Until she does that I think she remains damaged goods and can’t win.

      1. She cam closer than one else has last time.  This time this will be the only competitive race in CO so the dems wont waste heeps of cash on ed and can focus on the real pickup opportunities.

    1. A ground organization (her strength) matters alot in the CD4.

But if she actually thinks money doesn’t matter, when she has to buy in the Denver media market, boy it’s going to be ugly.

She is either A. prespinning bad finance numbers or B. emphasizing that you need organization as well as money to win and it was spun by the reporter.

I suspect its a bit of both.  She is probably coming to grips with the fact that fundraising is the least fun part of running for office.  Having not run for office she probably was unprepared for the fact that fundraising is 4-8 hours a day on the phone and multiple events a day.  It is emotionally draining and you need people around you willing to crack the whip and keep you focused on fund raising.

She probably wants to work on grassroot organizing, because she is good at it and she feels comfortable doing it.  The reality is staff can organize, but only the candidate can do serious fundraising, big money wants to talk to the candidate not proxies.

      1. Poo poo’ing fundraising is terrifically foolish, and airy comments about the grassroots is suicidal, since it only demonstrates you are not a serious candidate. This is Marilyn Musgrave we are talking about here, and the whole point of getting in this early is to raise the money to be competitive on television again Musgrave’s smears. There’s no other reason to be in right now, since the grassroots are still worn out from 2006.

So if Betsy Markey isn’t able or willing to get a real strategy together, why is she in the race?

        1. I disagree about the grassroots though.  The grassroots is energized right now, not worn out.

I actually think the D party has had 2 weaknesses for the last 25 years, poor organization is one of them.  Organizing is NOT something you do in the last 3 months before an election.

Organizing is something you do constantly, so that you can activate your ground campaign when you need to, either before an election or for elected officials to move the public on a piece of legislation.

This is the very start of the race.  I expect Markey to have some large contributions, but not a lot of breadth.  This is a function of her being a newcomer to elected office.  She probably wasn’t prepared for what a pain raising money is.  She probably has Salazar’s donor list, which is a big step up for a neophyte, because people in elected office that have a donor list hate giving them up out of fear of cannibalisation.  This will be an easy race to fund raise for (MM is a pretty good boogeyman and D’s do have a shot), but you still have to get out there and raise money.

          1. I think the point about grassroots is when a candidate says “I’m going to rely heavily on grassroots”, it sends a message out that says “I’m going to lag finacially”.  The more a candidate has to rely on grassroots, the more they’re saying “I can’t raise money”.

Not to say that it’s a bad thing to rely on grassroots-the most successful campaigns include a healthy combination of cash and grassroots.  But to rely soley on grassroots can only take a candidate so far.

            1. you need both.  I think she’s behind on fundraising, but she may be ahead on organizing.

truthfully, grassroots and organization are 2 different, but related things.  I don’t think anyone in CD4 has grassroots support, but I think BM is more capable of building a ground level organization than AP.

For instance Obama has superior grassroots support, but HRC has a superior organization.

              1. I disagree. Genuine grassroots support means lots of small donations from all over your territory. Sounds like that isn’t happening for Betsy Markey. Trying to separate healthy fundraising from healthy grassroots support is a big mistake for any campaign. By the end neither one is healthy.

                1. Who have no money, but knock tons of doors and build grassroots and win?  I don’t think that genuine grassroots mean more money-it’s that grassroots can only take you so far.  It might be good to win a state house seat or a state senate seat, and maybe a congressional seat here or there, but a major office in a major state?  You need both.  You need the activists who donate time and the rich people who can donate money.

HC and Obama seem like a good example, except that organization isn’t Obama’s only problem.

                  1. Grassroots equates into lots of small donors, especially in a federal campaign where knocking simply can’t compete with TV. My point is that you can’t draw a hard distinction between grassroots appeal and fundraising ability. Instead, they go hand in hand. Therefore, small donor contributions are a significant measure of grassroots support.

                    1. But I still disagree-I think you can draw a hard distinction between the two.  While small donor contributions may be a good measurement, it isn’t the only measurement.  I think it would be a mistake to say that if you have a lot of small donors you have a lot of grassroot support.  I would say that volunteers are a better measurement of grassroot support.  If people are willing to wave signs with a candidate at 7 am, or staff a stand at the fair for all week-that’s a more tangible measure of grassroot support than how much money they give.

Again, I think that the best campaigns are the ones who can successfully fundraise and get good grassroot support.  You can only go so far with one or the other

                    2. I agree for the most part. The problem at this phase though is that it would be insane to be waving signs on corners 16 months before the election, so donations are the only measure we’ve got right now.

  2. Well, now we know why so many die-hard Republicans really like Fred.  As counsel for the minority during the Watergate hearings, Thompson went behind the committee’s back and leaked info to the Nixon camp.

The Globe article recounts perhaps the most important instance, where Thompson leaked that the committee knew about the White House taping system.  Thompson himself admits it in his book, “At That Point In Time”; he jokes “I’m glad that all of this has finally caused someone to read my Watergate book […].”

So, does this increase his chances with the GOP faithful, or is it actually a problem for him?

      1. This is a serious issue. I dont know if you read the article at all, but this is a person who is misrepresenting himself. He likes to point to his time as a watergate prosecutor, specifically bringing to light the recording devices and tapes, as a person who helped to bring Nixon down. Clearly, that is not the case.

        1. I haven’t taken Fred Thompson seriously in this race so I haven’t looked into this or much of his politics.  I’m just saying that aside from rape, murder, or child molestation, I don’t give much thought to events from thirty plus years ago.  If he declares and it looks like he might have a shot, I’ll look for his responses to questions about this.  How’s that?:)

          1. I’m not taking him seriously in this race either. I guess since Watergate was such a significant event in our history, how a person portrays their actions as a part of that investigation does matter to me.

    1. It may increase his chances with some in the neo con crowd. I doubt that this will last. Obviously, it is so early in the cycle (christ, he hasnt even announced yet) that no one that is not a politico will remember. Clearly, this is a case of protect your man. Considering everything that has been going on with Libby this can only increase his stock with the hard core crowd.

  3. For year to date fundraising I now predict:

Polis has outraised Fitz-Gerald by over $100,000 and Shafroth by over $250,000. Polis by raising $310,000 forced the other two to try and file when no one is paying attention.

Udall will be outraised by Schaffer.

Musgrave will have raised over $500,000. Neither Markey or Paccione will break $50,000.

Perlmutter will be in the top 10 nationally for fundraising by a Freshman member.

Someone must have real information. Let the world know!

  4. Angie Paccione like every other candidate has been working hard to raise money.  Usually if you have raised a goodly amount you announce it to the world. Unless you know something from the inside I’d be surprised if she is even close to
    $100,000.

Does anyone have real info on the other Congressional candidates across the State?

    1. I don’t have any hard numbers, but maybe she’s waiting for betsy to put her numbers out first.  Betsy I think will be around 50K but Angie should be able to do a lot more.

  5. “There is no question that he committed perjury. … He has met the definition of committing high crimes and misdemeanors.. I’m confident of my vote. This vote is the easiest vote I’ll have to defend. It’s unfortunate. I really wish the president had not brought the country to this point”

“I disturbed by the partisanship of the Democrats, especially all the lobbying – the arm-twisting, the phone calls, the threats – from the White House.”

    — Bob Schaffer in 1998 about BIll Clinton.

While Schaffer accused Clinton of “wagging the dog” for bombing Iraq during impeachment hearing over what the definition of is, is, he is all to silent over the commutation of Scooter Libby who was convicted in a court of law of perjuring himself.

I think Schaffer’s Con Colors will be shown when he takes Party loyalty over the Law of the Land. I’m disappointed Schaffer thought we would forget that he dragged our country through a show trial for political purposes back in 1998.

  6. What kind of a Congressman refuses to talk to reporters about important issues in his district?

    From today’s Gazette –

NRA spokeswoman Rachel Parsons said the NRA will oppose any measure that closes the trail to vehicles.

With Hefley retired, there’s no proposal at all. His successor, Lamborn, has been cool to the idea. In November, he told the Mountain Mail newspaper in Salida, “I see some real problems with it.”

The NRA endorsed Lamborn and was one of his major donors, contributing $6,450 to his campaign, according to election records.
Lamborn did not return calls last week to comment on Brown’s Canyon.

    1. Are you new to pols?

So what’s your take on the Brown’s Canyon issue?  The way I understand it, you can still hunt there but the debate is whether or not to let ATVs through there.

I went rafting on the Arkansas through the Brown’s Canyon portion, and the guide asked us to write Lamborn and try and get him to buck the NRA and vote to make it pristine land.

I told him Lamborn was worthless and to wait until after 2008 when we have a Republican who has a spine in office.  They may not get what they want but at least they’ll know where their congressman stands.

By the way, I highly recommend rafting that river.  It was a blast
